FLIGHTS, PARTNERS & EVERYDAY EARNING

Can you earn Companion Pass without a new credit card?

Already have a Southwest card, fly often, or need a few thousand more points? You have options besides another application.

Quick answer

You can earn the pass without opening a credit card. The target is still 135,000 qualifying points or 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year. Existing Southwest card rewards, paid flights, partner base points and eligible debit rewards can help you get there.

The flight route

The standard alternative to 135,000 points is 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year. Reward travel and companion reservations don’t count. Use the flight qualification counter in your account; don’t estimate credit from the number of airports or intermediate stops on an itinerary.

If work already keeps you flying Southwest, those trips may get you there. Buying extra flights just to reach 100 could cost more than buying tickets for your companion.

Paid-flight points also contribute through the points route. With Cash + Points, qualifying point earnings are based on the eligible base fare paid in dollars, not the entire ticket value.

Hotel stays and car rentals

Base points earned through eligible Rapid Rewards partners can count. Transferring points from a hotel loyalty program doesn’t. Before booking, check exactly which points the offer awards and when they’ll reach Southwest.

Compare the total price with booking elsewhere. Paying $180 more for the same room is part of the cost of earning your pass. You might also give up hotel-status benefits or hotel points by booking through a different service.

Shopping and dining you already do

If you’re a few points short, a shopping portal or dining program may help without adding another bill to your budget. Follow the partner’s instructions for clicking through or linking a card, and keep the confirmation. Returns can take the points back.

Check base points and promotional bonuses separately. A portal’s extra bonus may not qualify for Companion Pass even when the normal purchase points do.

Existing cards and debit rewards

Check your current Southwest credit-card rewards and whether your annual qualification boost is already included in your progress. You don’t need a new welcome bonus for ordinary eligible purchase points to count.

The Southwest debit card offers another eligible source, with account fees and conditions. Read our debit-card chapter before assuming its welcome bonus will post quickly enough.

A realistic gap-closing example

Imagine you have 128,400 qualifying points after all posted boosts. You need 6,600 more. If you have $3,600 in planned purchases earning one qualifying point per dollar and 3,000 verified partner base points expected to post in the same year, your projected total is 135,000.

That exact-threshold example has no cushion. A returned $100 purchase or delayed partner posting would leave you short. Aim for a little more than you need, and check your tracker to confirm you’ve qualified. Buying 6,600 points or transferring them from another program wouldn’t close this gap.
